How do I begin a conversation? |

Beginning conversations with people you don't know can be very
daunting. Try to remember that other people will find it difficult
too. If you are at a networking event, you are all there to generate
contacts and business, so don't be shy.
The best way to begin a conversation is often to comment on the
weather, or the food, or the terrible journey you have had, or
something in the news that day. Don't worry about talking about your
business straight away, just make a comment to initiate the
conversation.
Once you are talking, ask what the
person is called and what they do. This will give you some clues as to
what to say next and how to introduce your company. Try to focus on
the aspect of your company which will be most relevant to them and
concentrate on who you are, what you do and the benefit of dealing with
your organisation (think unique selling points).
Remember
to focus on building a relationship - you are not trying to sell to
this person, so be patient. It takes time to build trust and, only
then will they be happy to refer business or contacts to you.
