Death Came Third... Networking a room of strangers is more
frightening than public speaking and death, but it can be a very
powerful tool for your business - if you use it wisely. Our top tips
for successful networking include:
1. Preparation
Make
sure you prepare for your networking events. Have you planned which
events to attend, who you would like to speak to, what you plan to
say? Are you dressed appropriately, is your tie straight etc.
2. People
When
approaching groups, ensure their body language is open. Your handshake
should be firm and confident and you should make eye contact with the
people you are meeting... and Smile. Try not to stand too close to
people and invade their personal space, but stand close enough that you
can be heard easily.
3. Interactions
Try
to keep your introduction short and focus on who you are, what you do
and your unique selling point - what do you want people to remember
about your business? Remember that selling at networking events is
inappropriate. Focus on building relationships with people and
developing trust.
4. Follow-ups
When
you leave a networking event, keep a record of the people you met and
keep in touch with them. If you remember any items you discussed about
hobbies or interests, keep a note of these and also how you can help
that person or potential contacts with whom they could help you.
5. Think Differently
Every
meeting is a networking opportunity. It might be a family barbeque, a
pub quiz or a train journey, but everyone you meet is a potential for
creating a new relationship and growing your business. Keep an open
mind and keep your eyes open for opportunities.
